If your fence is running up to the house itself, attach the first fence post to the building with wall anchors. For a strong fixing, make sure you insert the anchors into masonry and not into a mortar joint. Drill three large holes - big enough to take the head of the bolt and a spanner - in the fence post. Make these holes about 1" (25mm) deep. In the centre of each hole, drill a clearance hole for the anchor bolt right through the post. Hold the fence post against the wall to mark the position of the holes. Using a power drill and masonry bit, bore holes in the masonry for the wall anchors. Bolt the post to the wall, checking with a spirit level that the post is vertical in both planes. If necessary, insert packing between the post and the wall. If your first post is to be free-standing, it will form the datum point for the whole fence, so it is vital that you set it upright to ensure the fence runs in a straight line.
