To cut a paving slab to size, first score a continuous line all around the slab. Following the scored line as a guide, cut a shallow groove across the pad and down each edge, using a bolster chisel and club hammer. Place a batten just below the groove to raise the slab off the ground. Place a block of wood on top, and give it one or two sharp blows with the hammer until the slab splits along the line. Having laid all the paving slabs, remove the hardboard spacers and brush dry mortar mix into the gaps, then lightly sprinkle with water to set it off.
