Cutting slabs

  • To cut a paving slab to size, first score a continuous line all around the slab.
  • Following the scored line as a guide, cut a shallow groove across the pad and down each edge, using a bolster chisel and club hammer.
  • Place a batten just below the groove to raise the slab off the ground. Place a block of wood on top, and give it one or two sharp blows with the hammer until the slab splits along the line.
  • Having laid all the paving slabs, remove the hardboard spacers and brush dry mortar mix into the gaps, then lightly sprinkle with water to set it off.
