Fitting rack bolts is another way to spread the load placed on a door frame by a forced entry. They are operated by a fluted key that fits all bolts of the same design. Rack bolts should only be used to provide additional security - they are no substitute for proper locks Fit two rack bolts in the edge of the stile, one about 300mm (1') from the top of the door and another the same distance from the bottom. You could fit them into the top and bottom rails, but you would have to take the door off its hinges in order to fit them. Score a line down the centre of the door edge, using a marking gauge. Mark the centre of the bolt hole, using a try square and pencil, and transfer the centre line onto the face of the door. Then mark the centre of the keyhole on the inside face of the door. Bore a hole for the bolt in the edge of the door. Change to a 10mm spade bit and drill the keyhole through the inside face of the door into the bolt hole. Push the bolt into place and mark round the faceplate with a knife. Remove the bolt and carefully chop out the recess to set the faceplate flush with the edge of the door. Screw the bolt in place and finish the keyhole with the cover plate. Close the door and use the key to operate the bolt - this marks its position on the frame. Drill a clearance hole in the frame on the centre mark, then mark out and cut a recess for the locking plate. Fix in place with screws.
